Assessment of Blood Flow in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Correlations of Computed Tomography Perfusion Imaging and Circulating Angiogenic Factors
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly vascular tumor through the process of angiogenesis. To evaluate more non-invasive techniques for assessment of blood flow (BF) in HCC, this study examined the relationships between BF of HCC measured by computer tomography (CT) perfusion imaging and four circulating angiogenic factors in HCC patients. Interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 8 (IL-8), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) in plasma were measured using Bio-Plex multiplex immunoassay in 21 HCC patients and eight healthy controls. Circulating IL-6, IL-8 and VEGF showed higher concentrations in HCC patients than in controls (p < 0.05), and predicted HCC occurrence better than chance (p < 0.01). Twenty-one patients with HCC received 21-phase liver imaging using a 64-slice CT. Total BF, arterial BF, portal BF, arterial fraction (arterial BF/total BF) of the HCC and surrounding liver parenchyma, and HCC-parenchyma ratio were measured using a dual-vessel model. After analyzing the correlations between BF in HCC and four circulating angiogenic factors, we found that the HCC-parenchyma ratio of arterial BF showed a significantly positive correlation with the level of circulating IL-8 (p < 0.05). This circulating biomarker, IL-8, provides a non-invasive tool for assessment of BF in HCC.

AIM To evaluate the role of computed tomography (CT) perfusion imaging in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventeen patients (9 men, 8 women) with newly diagnosed HCC, proven by biopsy, were evaluated with 256-slice helical CT. Perfusion parameters of blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), arterial perfusion (AP), portal perfusion (PP), and hepatic perfusion i...
متن کاملAbnormal cerebral blood flow in methamphetamine abusers assessed by brain perfusion single emission computed tomography
Introduction:Amphetamines are central nervous system (CNS) stimulant substances and amphetamine abuse is considered a growing problem in our country. Previous studies revealed destructive effects of amphetamines on metabolism, perfusion and structure of brain. The aim of current study was evaluating regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) disturbances in methamphetamine (MA) abuser...
متن کاملPreclinical evaluation of biopolymer-delivered circulating angiogenic cells in a swine model of hibernating myocardium.
BACKGROUND Vasculogenic cell-based therapy combined with tissue engineering is a promising revascularization approach targeted at patients with advanced coronary artery disease, many of whom exhibit myocardial hibernation. However, to date, no experimental data have been available in this context; we therefore examined the biopolymer-supported delivery of circulating angiogenic cells using a cl...
متن کاملFDG-avid portal vein tumor thrombosis from hepatocellular carcinoma in contrast-enhanced FDG PET/CT
Objective(s): In this study, we aimed to describe the characteristics of portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT), complicating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in contrast-enhanced FDG PET/CT scan. Methods: In this retrospective study, 9 HCC patients with FDG-avid PVTT were diagnosed by contrast-enhanced fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT), which is a comb...
متن کاملC-arm computed tomography and volume perfusion computed tomography (VPCT)-based assessment of blood volume changes in hepatocellular carcinoma in prediction of midterm tumor response to transarterial chemoembolization: a single center retrospective trial
BACKGROUND This study aims to evaluate immediate changes in perfusion parameters in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in C-arm computed tomography (CT) and volume perfusion CT (VPCT) and prediction of midterm tumor response. METHODS Twenty-five patients (median age 66, range 61 to 75 years) with 62 HCC lesions undergoing TACE received immediate pre- and ...
